In the horrible reflective light across the spines of the CD’s at St Vinnie’s in Waunakee (the light shines right down on the CD section and makes it hard to see) this one caught my eye. I was thinking it was Miles Davis, which it wasn’t once I pulled it out, but, it did have a trumpet on the cover. The CD is called “Miles – Innate Sounds”
The cover photo shows a guy playing muted trumpet while sitting on a bike in what looks to be a dorm hallway. I was intrigued.
The back lists the tracks and looks homemade.
CD’s at St. Vinny’s are $1. How could I not get this just to check it out. To make it even more sweet… it was signed.
So, I bought it.
A brief Google search proved that this CD didn’t exist. I couldn’t find anything on it anywhere. However, Innate Sounds and Miles Bonny kept popping up. Could this be the same Miles?
Miles Bonny, DJ, Producer, Trumpet player… it seemed to fit.
I found his blog and like a huge music dork, e-mailed him.
To my surprise, he wrote me back!
“Miles – Innate Sounds” was indeed his CD. In fact it was his first. He hand-made only about 10 copies in his dorm room. He was making music with a Roland JX305 keyboard. This CD unfortunately is pretty scuffed and the last 4 songs won’t play, but the rest is good, reminding me a bit of DJ Shadow. I asked if I could pimp his website:
MilesBonny.com
I have checked out a lot of his stuff and I am digging it. I really like this release that you can find on Bandcamp… “Miles Bonny – Lumberjack Soul” from 2011.

The trumpet is awesome on this. I love the vibe of the whole album. Laid back and smooth. I highly recommend this one. It has enough trumpet to hold you and the beats and Miles voice flow nicely throughout. Good stuff.
There is a lot of his music on Soundcloud too.
I’m glad I took a chance on this homemade CD. It lead me down the path to discover Miles Bonny.
Check him out.
