Cindy took me to see Sean Michael Dargan.
Now I have heard of SMD from Cindy’s CD collection, and I even bought her one that I found when I was out and about treasure hunting, but all I knew going in was that he was local, Irish, and sometimes played bagpipes.
Check out his website, http://www.seanmichaeldargan.com/ There is a free download of an older CD on his Merch page.
This evening he was playing alone and acoustic at Brocah on the square.
We drove down and I couldn’t help getting the iconic Madison shot.
There was no Marquee, but inside the restaurant there was a chalked sign.
This was his opening night. We were early and had a drink and a pic and waited while Sean was still setting up.
He started playing and we made our way into the main room and found a table. The sound of his acoustic was very rich and tonal. He was just up on a little raised area in the front where they moved some tables out of the way. There were 2 speakers on tripod poles and a mic. Nothing fancy or complicated. It was actually perfect for that night. It was like a show in your living room, or around a campfire, cozy and nice. I was actually surprised at the smooth tone his guitar made. I didn’t know the song he was playing, but it was good.
My pictures, except one were dark because of the lighting, but you’ll get the idea.
Art shot.
At the end of the next song he revealed that it was about his daughter. There was a Joe Biden song and another I didn’t know, and then he did a cover of Elvis Costello’s “Radio Radio”. It was very cool. A slower quieter version, but awesome.
Sean was having fun and we were really digging it. Sorry bout the dark pictures.
He took requests and played a song for a couple at a near table. Cindy tried to recall the name of a particular SMD song she wanted to hear (apparently there are 2 versions acoustic and electric) and when she confirmed the title, “Believe It Or Not”, I shouted it out at the next break between songs. He was delighted to do it. There was a sing-along part and when we got there, more than just Cindy was singing it out. People there knew it.
I eventually was that guy and used my flash to get a better picture. Sorry Sean for the flash.
So, the lighting was bad, but the music and atmosphere was fantastic. I really enjoyed it and he has 3 more dates coming.
I recommend you check him out.
Thanks for the night out Cindy. Great pick!
