I loathe the bus.
Actually… I loathe the MALL.
In fact, I take great care to avoid it, unless there is something specific that I need in there. In those cases I figure out what entrance is closest to the store I need to patronize, ninja shop, then get out fast. It has served me well for many years.
Recently though, having found ourselves at an impromptu dinner at the newly opened Cheesecake Factory at the mall (it has an outside entrance) and having to wait 40 minutes for a table, we wandered in with time to kill. Just the little ways in mind you.
After exhausting the Sephora store, we wandered to Hot Topic almost with a laugh.
Does anyone remember Spencer’s stores which used to be at every mall every created? A place you could get your teeny bopper and band posters, sexy gag gifts and all manner of trinkets and mall rat knick knacks? Well, I’m told they still exist in some spots, but in our mall it was replaced by Hot Topic. Less of the trinkets and knick knacks and more shirts.
My senses were accosted immediately by a huge wall of band shirts. From eye level to the ceiling which was actually quite high. There was a very wide spread of bands, from hot and young to oldies but goodies… I had my eye from the start on some Iron Maiden shirts, and they were buy one get one half off. Damn you Hot Topic.
I’m not sure that 51 year old music nerd white guy is their demographic, but there were shirts there I had never seen before. They had 3 such cotton colossus walls with shirts in the store and before I knew it I was at the checkout with 2.
We returned to Cheesecake Factory with me proudly sporting my Hot Topic bag.
Dinner was great by the way. The food was awesome and the cheesecake IS amazing.
So what did the 51 year old music nerd white guy get?…
with this on the back…
This is prime live music show gear.
Also acquired was this unforgettable image for Joy Division.
Man I love that graphic.
They don’t sell these at Target.
Now I can wear the same shirt as a 16 year old who only learned about the bands from their older brother and wear it just because they look goth in them and the black is as dark as their angst ridden black little hearts.
At least I can’t wear these to the shows of the bands anymore.
I did see Bauhaus when they and Peaches opened for Nine Inch Nails in Milwaukee years and years ago. They were theatrical and scary and after Peaches it was a hard left turn, but since I only knew the song “Bela Lagosi’s Dead” up to that point, I was lost. I liked it, but I didn’t know any of the material. Since then I have delved in and really gotten to know their music. Bauhaus and Joy Division would make a great mix tape.
I will wear these to upcoming Madison shows with pride.
Just don’t tell anyone I got them from Hot Topic.
